Septoplasty

Overview

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure for correction of deviated nasal septum, a bone that divides two nostrils.

About Septoplasty

Nasal Septum Surgery is a surgical procedure for correction of deviated nasal septum, a bone that divides two nostrils.

The condition of a deviated septum takes place if the septum shifts more towards one side of the nose. This condition results in one nasal passage becoming smaller and the other one being larger resulting in breathing difficulties. During the procedure, the septum is straightened and positioned in the middle of the nostrils.

Nasal Septum Surgery is commonly called Septoplasty.

More Information on Septoplasty
Indication

A deviated septum is common in many individuals, but when this condition becomes more severe, one of the nasal passages might get blocked, thus restricting the flow of air in and out of lungs. A deviated septum may also lead to bleeding or crusting in some patients. Nasal surgery is recommended in such severe cases.

Sometimes the procedure is performed as a cosmetic surgery along with rhinoplasty, to simply reposition a crooked nose.

Pre-Procedure

Before the procedure, the doctor will

  • Conduct a thorough physical examination and take photographs of the nose
  • Advise to stop blood thinners, at least 2 weeks before the procedure
  • Recommend against smoking

During-Procedure

Septoplasty can be performed either under the influence of local anesthesia or general anesthesia. The type of anesthesia that is to be given to the patient is a decision taken by the patient in consultation with the doctor.

On the whole the procedure takes up roughly around 45 to 60 minutes. The experience of the procedure depends on the type of anesthesia.

During the surgery, an incision is made on the nose. The nasal bone is trimmed and repositioned. Absorbable stitches are used to suture the incision.

Silicon pads will be inserted in the nostrils to support the repositioned septum and a bandage will be applied on the nose.

Post-Procedure

In most cases, the patient can go home within a few hours after the procedure. For faster healing, the doctor will advise

  • Not to indulge in any kind of strenuous tasks. Indulging in exercise or jogging may cause bleeding of the nose
  • Not to blow or prick the nose
  • Sleep with head elevated at an angle

Risk and Complication

Like any other surgical procedure, septoplasty too involves certain risks, they are:

  • Excessive bleeding during and after the surgery
  • Infection
  • Nose may be slightly changed in shape
  • Affect the sensation of smell
  • Upper gums may experience some numbness
