What are the types of Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery is performed by 3 different methods which are broadly classified as:

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy: It is a moderately invasive procedure performed to reduce weight. It’s a nonreversible process. Time taken in operation theatre is around 45 to 60 minutes. The stay in the hospital is around 1 to 4 days. Approximately, 80% of the excess fat is removed from the stomach and further stomach will become banana in shape and size.
  • Gastric Bypass Surgery or Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: A small pouch is made on the top of the stomach which limits the digestion process. Its invasive procedure and a reversible process. The time taken in operation theatre is 60 to 90 minutes. The stay in hospital is 1 to 4 days Further, a small part of the small intestine is removed so that the food directly bypass to this part of the small intestine where the nutrients will get absorbed.
  • Laparoscopic Gastric Banding: With the use of laparoscope a band is tied on the uppermost part of the stomach and a small pouch is made which holds the food. It’s a reversible procedure. The time taken in the operation theatre is 30 to 40 min. The stay in hospital is 2 to 3 days. This allows the patient to feel full even after having small meals.
  • Further explanations of types of surgery

Before the start of any procedure, general anesthesia is given to relax the patient so that he won’t feel any pain at the time of surgery.

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy is a surgical procedure which can be performed open or through laparoscope as well. An incision is made in the abdomen and stomach is stapled vertically to create a narrow sleeve. Thereafter, a large part of the stomach is removed and then a banana shape is a form.

  • Gastric Bypass Surgery or Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass:
  • The surgery is performed in 2 parts. In the first section, an upper part of the stomach is stapled and a pouch is made which will hold the food in it after surgery i.e. less calorie intake resulting in a reduction in weight. The other part of the stomach is not utilized after the surgery.

In the second section, the bypass is performed where the connection in between stomach and intestine is made. A portion of the intestine is removed through surgery and a connection is made with the stomach so that the food can directly travel from pouch to the small intestine for the digestion process. Through this process, the food will bypass and resulting in absorption of few calories and leads to a reduction in weight.

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Banding
  • During this surgery, a laparoscope is used. A small incision is made in the upper abdomen and a band is tied on the upper part of the stomach which divides it into 2 parts. No suturing is required during this procedure. The stomach becomes pouch after surgery which can hold an ounce of food in it which later helps in the reduction of weight.
